Hungry for Hockey!
Friday, February 11, 2022: Ending the week on a SWEET NOTE! Twin Cities Live featured all-things Hockey this week, and that’s a topic near-and-dear to my heart. I’m super excited that TCL invited me back to the studio today share some fun, make-at-home versions of hockey food – things that you typically find at hockey arena concession stands.
While we’re mainly talking about SWEETS on the show today, we’ve got some great SAVORY recipes linked below, too – and more on the way!
EASY RECIPES and SIMPLE INGREDIENTS are key in this series so everyone can enjoy the game. These recipes are great for kids to make, too!
Since my niece (12UA) and nephew (Squirt A Black) are Minnetonka Hockey rock stars and avid foodies in their own right, I asked them about their favorite hockey food items. Their lists are long, but we came up with some great, kid-friendly recipes that are easy enough to make at home for the whole team.
You’ll notice that three of the recipes include dough. And guess what? All of these recipes use the same ready-made dough which means fewer items on your grocery list.
To have even more fun with the theme, we used hockey terms to name the recipes for the show!
Slap Shot Pizza Bombs with Sauce (click for recipe)
“Slap Shot” : Considered the hardest shot in hockey; used to create the maximum power and speed on a shot.
“Sauce” : When the puck is passed through the air over an opponent’s stick to a teammate’s stick, tape to tape.
We absolutely LOVE these big, pillow-y bombs dipped in of marinara sauce, but they’re also amazing dipped in hot honey! (YES!!) Our house fave hot honey is a sweet-and-savory concoction called Honey Pot – locally made in St. Paul, MN. You can buy it online from from the Makers at The Salsa Collaborative and 14 Spice.
Rink Rolls with Hat Trick Sauce (click for recipe)
A “Hat Trick” is when a player scores three goals in a game, and this sauce has just three ingredients. We went super basic with these because they’re great just the way they are. But, there are also lots of ways to make Rink Rolls and the Hat Trick Sauce to suit your home team!
Chippy Chicken Bites w/ Celly Sauce (click for recipe)
“Chippy” is when things start to get a little feisty on the ice (but well before the gloves come off).
“Celly” is a celebration after a goal is scored. (FYI: The word “celebration” is totally un-cool. Don’t use it.)
The recipes are Pretzel Crusted Chicken Tenders w/ Cheddar Ranch Sauce. What better way to “celly” after a game well played than with good food and good friends!
Barn Burner Brownies (click for recipe)
“Barn Burner” : a term used to describe a game that is high scoring, fast paced, and exciting to watch.
Think Kitchen Sink Brownies, but with ALL your favorite salty, sweet, crunchy and chewy concession stand snacks on top. This recipe is a great way to use up whatever snacks you have on hand, too. This quick and easy recipe uses your favorite box brownie mix so you’ll be ready for the Home Game in no time!
Sin Bin Butter Baked Mini Doughnuts (click for recipe)
“Sin Bin” : Another term for the Penalty Box.
Who doesn’t like mini doughnuts?! And “butter baked”? I made that term up after making these doughnuts (it’s explained in the recipe post). You’re gonna love how easy and delicious these babies are!
Top Shelf Hot Honey Nut Caramel Popcorn (click for recipe)
“Top Shelf” : When a player scores a goal into the very top part of the net hitting the mesh that basically acts as the roof of the net.
This recipe occurred in “overtime”. After realizing that I had lots of ingredients left over from other recipes, I started thinking about ways to use them and then this crave-worthy little snacky-snack happened!
This snack mix blends sweet with a little heat from our house fave hot honey: Honey Pot – locally made in St. Paul, MN. You can buy it online from from the Makers at The Salsa Collaborative and 14 Spice.
I hope you enjoy these stories and recipes as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them!
If you make them, please let me know. Tag @BaconFatte and #BaconFatte on Facebook and Instagram posts so I see them!
