Fresh Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce
Fresh Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce is light and clean with yogurt-y tang. Spoon it onto salads and grilled or roasted meats and veggies. Dip fresh veggies, tortilla chips and crackers in it for snacks and appetizer. There are endless ways to enjoy it anytime of year!
This Fresh Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce recipe had been on my “Must Make” list for quite a while, and I finally had the perfect excuse: An overabundance of cilantro and a bunch of gorgeous homegrown Serrano chilies from a friend!
I just needed to hunt down some green chile powder for the recipe. It’s totally optional, but lends well to the layers of flavor. I had chili powder in my cupboard, but one quick call to my “chile godmother” friend confirmed that the two powders differ in more ways than just their spelling.
“Chili powder is usually a blend of ground chile pods and other spices like cumin, peppercorn, and salt. Chile powder most often refers to pure ground chile pods with few or no additives; the only way to tell is to read the ingredient label.” –FineCooking.com
{We really do learn something new every day if we’re paying attention!}
Thankfully, my friend also happened to have some chile powder on hand that she was willing to share, so I used this Green Chile Molido (powder).
Right out of the jar, the chile powder definitely tastes like green chile peppers. It’s got some chile pepper heat, too, so keep that in mind when determining what quantities to use based on your own delicate or demanding palate.
This yogurt sauce is light and clean with yogurt-y tang… Think of cool, creamy tzatziki sauce but with a bit more depth and a little bite. It’s full of nice, fresh flavors that go beautifully with all kinds of veggies and meats. I’ve changed the ingredients up many times over the years, and and it’s finally exactly what we crave!
We also love how versatile this yogurt sauce is. It makes a great veggie dip, and it’s equally as delicious with tortilla chips and cheese and crackers – or just right off the spoon.
We absolutely love its bright, fresh flavor with grilled chicken (seasoned with just salt, pepper and garlic powder), and grilled or roasted potatoes, carrots, onions, corn, etc. It’s also really delicious with grilled pork chops, slow cooked pork roast, and grilled salmon. And, this yogurt sauce pairs ridiculously well with our Corn Saute with Fresh Ginger and Cilantro so think about that the next time you’re looking for something to top your blackened chicken/pork/fish soft tacos with!

Family Style: Fresh Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce served with Grilled Pork Tenderloin, Brown Rice, and Sauteed Cherry Tomatoes.
One of our favorite ways to enjoy this sauce is with grilled pork tenderloin (seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dried oregano) and steamed brown rice with sauteed sweet onions (olive oil, chopped onion and salt to taste, sauteed 10 – 15 minutes then tossed in with the cooked rice). We love this dish with LOTS of fresh lime wedges… It’s absolutely wonderful!
It’s also really good served with burgers, quesadillas and kabobs. It’s perfect for grilling season. Actually, this Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce is perfect any time.

Fresh Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce is great with leftovers!
Enjoy!

Fresh Cilantro Lime Yogurt Sauce
This is a fabulously versatile sauce. It’s light and clean with yogurt-y tang, and goes well with fresh or grilled veggies and grilled or roasted meats. It’s great on tacos, burgers and kabobs, and equally delicious with tortilla chips and crackers.
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 - 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 cup fresh cilantro - tightly packed
- 1 - 2 small Serrano chile peppers - seeds & ribs removed, coarsely chopped
- 1 clove fresh garlic - chopped
- Zest of ½ - 1 lime
- 3 - 4 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 1 teaspoon mild green chili powder
- ¼ - ½ teaspoon kosher salt - to taste
Instructions
-
Prep and chop the cilantro, Serrano pepper(s) and lime, then put all the ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse/blend until completely smooth. The finished sauce has a light, fresh green color with tiny dark green speckles.
-
Pour into a glass bowl, cover and place into the refrigerator for an hour or so or overnight to allow the flavors to blend through before serving. Taste and add more salt, etc., if needed.
-
Garnish with more fresh cilantro and lots of fresh lime slices for a pretty presentation. Or, just grab a spoon and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
*You can use regular yogurt as well
*Definitely adjust ingredient levels to suit your tastes.
*The more lime juice you use, of course, the thinner the sauce will become. If you want a thicker sauce with more lime flavor, use more lime zest.
*The mayonnaise is completely optional, but really adds richness to the recipe.
*This sauce is great right after you make it, but as with most sauces, the flavors intensify with time so make it at least an hour (or a day) before serving.
*Keeps well - covered and refrigerated - for about 3 days.
